Afterschool Coding Club: Introduction to Coding

Friday, October 6
03:30 pm to 05:00 pm

The Afterschool Coding Club has been officially launched thanks to the generous donations of many community members here in Penticton.

For the first session, we will introduce tween coders to the basics of coding, explore the uses of the different coding languages, see what jobs you can get as a coder, and dive into coding using Scratch 2.0 on a Chromebook. Depending on time, we may cover more topics.

All technology and supplies will be provided for this free tween program. No coding experience will be necessary.

Registration for the ACC and its waitlist is now full. Stay tuned for more S.T.E.A.M. and coding programs in the winter/spring!

Youth Advisory Committee (YAC)

Friday, October 13
03:45 pm to 05:15 pm

FREE PIZZA-- wait, we did that in the wrong order.

If you want to boss the library around, are a superstar event planner, have stellar skills for finding books, comics, dvds & more that teens will love that we can fill our shelves with, AND want free pizza - we want you! The YAC is a group of teens aged 13-18 who tell us at the library how we're doing as well as plan our monthly teen events. This month's YAC meeting will be all about sorting out the final details for our October Event as well as polishing plans for the rest of our fall events. Current YAC members who bring friends might also get free swag...

Did we mention the free pizza? Drop-in, fill up, and share your thoughts. We want to hear from you!

Don't forget, YAC participation can boost your resume & earn you volunteer hours for your grad portfolio - or any other volunteer requirements!

Teens 13 to 18

Nightmare on Main Street

Saturday, October 14
07:00 pm to 09:30 pm

Slither, haunt, stalk, creep or ooze your way over to the Library this month for our teen Halloween event! We're beinging back some old (Werewolf the game, monster trivia) and introducing some new (a mini escape room, spooky story telling, a photo booth with props*) ideas and activities for this event!

Other exciting parts: appropriately spooky snacks**, chilling music, and maybe, if we have time, a couple short Halloween videos.

Open to ages 13-18, this free teen event is drop-in & no registration is required. Costumes encouraged, too!

*If you have old Halloween/costume props you'd like to lend for the photo booth, please let Lara know.
**If you can bring a sampling of spooky snacks, help is always appreciated (especially by fellow teen tummies)!

Afterschool Coding Club: Coding with Scratch

Friday, October 20
03:30 pm to 05:00 pm

Springboarding off of our first session, tween coders will continue to explore, experiment and create with the Scratch 2.0 coding language. We will use a mix of activities and self-directed learning to create basic programs. Along the way, coders will develop the skills and mindset needed to successfully create a game during the next Coding Club meeting on November 3.

All technology and supplies will be provided for this free tween program. No coding experience will be necessary.

Registration for the ACC and its waitlist is now full. Stay tuned for more S.T.E.A.M. and coding programs in the winter/spring!

S.T.E.A.M. Powered: Spooky Science

Wednesday, October 25
03:30 pm to 04:30 pm

Can you make a gummy worm dance? Do you know how many colours are in black jelly beans? Come experiment with all your favourite candies!

Registration opens online on Tuesday October at www.pentictonlibrary.ca or in person at the Museum.

Afterschool Coding Club: Game Design with Scratch and Makey Makey

Friday, November 3
03:30 pm to 05:00 pm

We're here! Coders will learn to create a game using Scratch 2.0 during this session, using all the skills and creative ideas they've developed so far. Once the game has been designed, we'll introduce a new technology: the Makey Makey. Makey Makeys allow anyone to pull on their inventory shoes and turn every-day objects into controls for your computer. So, not only will we be dabbling in software, but also a little bit of hardware basics as the coders create their very own unique game controller for the game they have created.

All technology and supplies will be provided for this free tween program. No coding experience will be necessary.

Afterschool Coding Club: Making the Rounds with Sphero SPRK+

Friday, November 17
03:30 pm to 05:00 pm

For this session we'll be shifting gears and introducing a third technology for the coders to test drive: the Sphero SPRK+. The SPRK+ is an educational, programmable robotic ball that can be controlled on three different levels: drawing, block coding (just like Scratch!) and with text coding. For this session, we'll be focusing on the second method. Coders will be challenged to use what they've learned from Scratch programming and see if they can create specific shapes, navigate obstacle courses, and even test each other to see who has the best combination of coding/driving skills!

All technology and supplies will be provided for this free tween program. No coding experience will be necessary.
