S.T.E.A.M. Powered: DIY Solar Oven S'mores Kit Pickup

Thursday, September 24
03:00 pm

S.T.E.A.M. Powered returns! The Library and Penticton Museum & Archives have been hard at work to bring back one of our favourite tween programs, and we're excited to share that we're ready to launch!

The program will now have two parts: (1) a take-home kit with materials and a guide booklet to complete an activity, and (2) a livestreamed video (hosted here on our Facebook page) that will allow Chandra and Lara to walk you through the steps of the activity as well as answer any questions our viewers might have. If you miss the video, it will still be available on our page after the program.
This program is open to ages 8-12, and we will have kits available to pick up starting next Thursday, September 24 at 3:00 pm. 20 kits will be available. There will be no registration beforehand - we just will ask for your name and contact info when you grab the kits. Also, there's more good news: kits can be shared with family members, so if you have a little sibling that wants to help or watch at home, that's okay too! We hope that this format will work for the many different schedules our patrons have.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact Lara at lharker@summer.com

Pocket Full of Prose: Dear Martin Discussion

Thursday, October 1
03:30 pm to 04:30 pm

This month's teen book club read is Dear Martin by Nic Stone

Content warnings: mature language and topics

Taken from Goodreads:

Raw, captivating, and undeniably real, Nic Stone joins industry giants Jason Reynolds and Walter Dean Myers as she boldly tackles American race relations in this stunning debut.

Justyce McAllister is top of his class and set for the Ivy League—but none of that matters to the police officer who just put him in handcuffs. And despite leaving his rough neighborhood behind, he can't escape the scorn of his former peers or the ridicule of his new classmates. Justyce looks to the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for answers. But do they hold up anymore? He starts a journal to Dr. King to find out.

Then comes the day Justyce goes driving with his best friend, Manny, windows rolled down, music turned up—way up, sparking the fury of a white off-duty cop beside them. Words fly. Shots are fired. Justyce and Manny are caught in the crosshairs. In the media fallout, it's Justyce who is under attack.

Book pick up is on Saturday, September 12 starting at 10:00 am. Space is limited to 6 & book club kits are first-come, first-served.
